Pilar of Saint James

Pilar of Saint James

It is custom for visitors to place their fingers in the little cavities of the candle holder where Christ’s human genealogy is set forth; another tradition is to knock one’s head three times on the head of the image known as Santo dos Croques at the rear of this stunning marble column looking on to the altar. According to the folklore of Santiago, those doing so absorb the wisdom of the figure, which is said to be a portrait in stone of Maestro Mateo himself.
